Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to contest particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
