Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies pose an grave risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

The growing economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
